Module 8.3: If You're Not Admitted
This Is Disappointing, Not Defining
Let's be honest: not getting into ACL stings. Your student worked hard to prepare, invested time and emotional energy into the process, and wanted this outcome. The disappointment is real and valid.
But here's what needs to be said clearly: not being admitted to a program with a 4-5% acceptance rate says almost nothing about your student's potential. It says that an enormous number of strong students competed for a small number of spots, and the numbers didn't work in your favor this time. Full stop.
What happens next matters far more than this single admissions decision. The rest of this module is about making sure "what happens next" is excellent.
Reapplication Options: Advanced AET
If your student isn't admitted to the 9th-grade cohort, there's a real second chance: the Advanced AET pathway.
Advanced AET is a separate admissions track specifically for students currently in 10th grade. It allows students to enter the Academy of Engineering and Technology starting in 11th grade and complete the final two years of the AET program.
Here's how it works:

Timing: Advanced AET applications open during the winter admissions cycle (typically December through January for the following school year)

Eligibility: Current 10th-grade students in LCPS

Evaluation criteria: PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, or ACT scores, plus a writing assessment

No STEM Thinking Skills Assessment: The admissions test used for 8th-grade applicants is not part of the Advanced AET process
This is an important option because it uses different evaluation criteria than the original application. A student who didn't test well on the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment might perform very differently on the PSAT or SAT. The writing assessment is also evaluated separately.
If your student is interested in Advanced AET, here's what to do during 9th and 10th grade:

Take the most rigorous math and science courses available at the home high school

Prepare for and take the PSAT/NMSQT in 10th grade (this score is used for evaluation)

Continue developing strong writing skills

Stay engaged in STEM activities and coursework

Apply during the winter cycle of 10th grade
Alternative STEM Pathways in LCPS
ACL is not the only way to get a rigorous STEM education in Loudoun County. LCPS has invested in several specialized programs, and your student's home high school likely has strong offerings as well.
IB (International Baccalaureate) Programs
Two LCPS high schools --- Heritage High School and Loudoun Valley High School --- offer the IB Diploma Programme, with a Pre-IB program available in 9th and 10th grade. IB isn't STEM-specific --- it covers all academic disciplines --- but it's exceptionally rigorous and internationally recognized. The IB curriculum includes Higher Level sciences and math that are genuinely challenging, plus the Extended Essay requirement gives students a taste of independent research.
IB is worth considering if your student wants broad academic rigor rather than STEM specialization, or if they have strong interests across multiple disciplines.
ACCESS Academy
ACCESS (Accelerated College and Employability Skills) is a lab school partnership between LCPS, George Mason University, and NOVA. It's based at Potomac Falls High School for grades 9-10, with students moving to GMU's Fuse at Mason Square for grades 11-12.
ACCESS focuses specifically on information technology and career-ready skills. Admissions are lottery-based --- no entrance exam required. The program enrolls about 30 students per grade. Unlike ACL, ACCESS is open to all public, private, and homeschool students in the Commonwealth of Virginia, not just LCPS students. Students earn dual enrollment credits, micro-credentials, and industry certificates.
If your student is interested in IT and computer science specifically, ACCESS is a strong alternative to the AET IT/CS track.
HAMSci (Health and Medical Sciences Career Institute)
HAMSci is a four-year health sciences program at Briar Woods High School and Tuscarora High School. Students choose between a Biomedical Sciences pathway and a Biomedical Sciences + Language of Medicine pathway. Admissions are lottery-based --- no entrance exam required.
Unlike ACL, HAMSci students attend the host school full time --- they transfer to Briar Woods or Tuscarora, participate in that school's extracurriculars, and graduate from there. The program includes industry-recognized certifications and partnerships with organizations like Inova Health System.
If your student is drawn to health sciences, nursing, biomedical research, or medical careers, HAMSci is a dedicated pathway that didn't exist a few years ago.
AGLS (Academy of Global and Linguistic Studies)
AGLS at Dominion High School is a humanities-focused academy launching in the 2026-2027 school year, with full capacity (about 400 students) expected by 2030-2031. It's not a STEM program, but it's worth mentioning because some students who apply to ACL have broad interests that span STEM and humanities. AGLS offers two pathways --- Global Leadership (centered on Arabic) and Global Business (centered on Mandarin) --- with intensive language instruction and coursework in diplomacy, international relations, and global economics. Admissions are lottery-based.
NJROTC Program
Loudoun County High School offers a Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program, which is open to students from across the county who transfer to LCHS. While not a STEM academy per se, NJROTC develops leadership, discipline, and technical skills that translate well into engineering, cybersecurity, and other STEM fields. For students interested in military service academies or ROTC college scholarships, NJROTC provides a structured pathway.
Building a Strong STEM Trajectory at Your Home High School
Here's something that gets lost in the anxiety around ACL admissions: every LCPS high school offers a substantial slate of advanced courses. Your student can build a genuinely impressive STEM trajectory without leaving their home school.
AP Course Selection
The AP courses that matter most for STEM-focused students:

AP Calculus AB and BC (the gold standard for math readiness)

AP Statistics (increasingly valued in data-driven fields)

AP Physics 1, 2, and C (Mechanics and E&M)

AP Chemistry

AP Biology

AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles

AP Environmental Science
A student who takes four or five AP STEM courses, earns strong scores on the exams, and demonstrates genuine engagement with the material has a competitive college application --- with or without ACL on their transcript.
Dual Enrollment Through NOVA
LCPS students can take college courses through Northern Virginia Community College while still in high school. Dual enrollment lets your student earn college credit, experience college-level rigor, and demonstrate academic ambition on their transcript.
NOVA offers courses in math, science, computer science, engineering, and many other fields. Some courses can be taken online, which adds scheduling flexibility.
Independent Research Without ACL
You don't need to be in AOS to do research. Many students conduct independent research projects by:

Reaching out to professors at nearby universities (George Mason, Virginia Tech Northern Virginia Center, UVA) to volunteer in their labs

Entering science competitions like Regeneron Science Talent Search, Regeneron ISEF (through the regional science fair), or the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium

Participating in summer research programs at universities

Working with a home school science teacher as an informal mentor
Independent research is one of the most powerful things a high school student can do for college admissions, and it's not limited to ACL students.
STEM Clubs and Competitions
Most LCPS high schools have active STEM clubs and competition teams:

Science Olympiad

Math competitions (AMC, MATHCOUNTS alumni, Virginia Math League)

Robotics (FIRST Robotics Competition, VEX Robotics)

Computer science competitions (USACO, hackathons)

Debate and Model UN (for students who want to combine STEM with communication skills)
Deep involvement in one or two of these --- especially reaching leadership positions or achieving recognition at the state or national level --- can be more impactful on a college application than the ACL label itself.
How College Admissions Views ACL vs. Non-ACL Students
This is the question that haunts a lot of families, so let's address it directly.
Does attending ACL help with college admissions? Yes, somewhat. ACL appears on the transcript, and admissions officers at competitive colleges are generally familiar with the program. The rigorous coursework, integrated curriculum, and (for AOS students) independent research are all positives.
Is NOT attending ACL a disadvantage? No --- not if the student has built a strong profile through other means. College admissions officers evaluate students in the context of what was available to them. A student at a home high school who took the most challenging courses available, conducted independent research, led STEM clubs, and earned strong test scores is evaluated on the strength of what they actually did.
What matters more than the label: College admissions at competitive schools is fundamentally about demonstrated intellectual curiosity, academic rigor relative to what's available, meaningful extracurricular engagement, and strong writing. A student who does all of that at their home high school is competitive at the same colleges that ACL students apply to.
The honest truth: The students who get into top colleges from ACL would, in most cases, also have gotten into those colleges without ACL. The program gives them a great education and enriching experiences, but it's not a golden ticket. And conversely, students who don't attend ACL are not locked out of anything.
What you do with your opportunities matters infinitely more than which building you attend classes in. College admissions officers know this, even if the anxiety-driven parent community sometimes forgets it.
Moving Forward
If your student wasn't admitted to ACL, here's a practical action plan:

Allow the disappointment. It's real. Don't rush past it.

Set new goals for 9th grade. What courses will your student take? What clubs will they join? What skills will they build?

Consider Advanced AET. If the Academies are still a goal, start planning for the 10th-grade application.

Explore other programs. IB, ACCESS, HAMSci, and NJROTC all have their own application timelines. See if any are a fit.

Invest in the home school experience. The students who make the most of their home school's resources are the ones who build the strongest foundations --- for college and for life.

Keep the big picture in view. Four years from now, when your student is applying to college, what will matter is the depth and quality of their high school experience --- not whether they spent it at one school or two.
Your student's potential hasn't changed. Only the path has shifted.
