Module 4.1: Full-Length Mock Assessments
The Purpose of Mock Assessments
Mock assessments are the closest thing to a dress rehearsal you'll get before the real ACL admissions test. They serve three purposes: they establish where you are right now, they reveal patterns in your performance that targeted study can address, and they build the stamina and familiarity that make test day feel routine rather than overwhelming.
This guide covers three mock STEM Thinking Skills Assessments --- a diagnostic baseline, a mid-prep checkpoint, and a final simulation --- plus how to set up realistic conditions, score your results, analyze your performance by domain, and use what you learn to focus your remaining study time.
Remember: the STEM test is one of the primary factors in the ACL admissions decision, alongside the writing assessment and your grades/math enrollment. There are no extracurricular portfolios to compensate for a weak test. Your performance on this test matters --- and mock assessments are how you make sure you're ready.
Setting Up Realistic Test Conditions at Home
The value of a mock assessment comes from its realism. If you take a practice test on the couch with your phone nearby and no time pressure, you haven't learned anything about how you perform under actual test conditions.
Environment:

Sit at a desk or table with a computer

Clear the desk of everything except what you'd have on test day (the computer and scratch paper if allowed)

No phone --- not on silent, not face-down. In another room entirely.

No music, no TV, no siblings talking in the background. If your house is noisy, use a library or find a quiet time
-
Close the door if possible
Timing:

Use the exact time limits from the real assessment. If the test has multiple sections with separate time limits, enforce each one individually --- don't let yourself borrow time from one section to use on another

Use a timer you can see but that won't distract you. A simple kitchen timer or a phone timer set in another visible spot works well

When time is called, stop. No extra seconds to finish that last question.
Materials:

Take the mock test on a computer to mirror the real format --- the actual STEM test is administered online on LCPS-provided laptops

Have scratch paper available if the real test allows it
Mindset:

Treat this like the real thing. Get dressed. Eat the breakfast you'd eat on test day. Start at the same time if you can

Don't take breaks that wouldn't exist during the real test

If you feel the urge to look something up or check an answer mid-test, resist it. Note the question number and come back to it during your review
Mock Assessment 1: Diagnostic Baseline
When to take it: At the beginning of your preparation, before you've done significant targeted study. The whole point is to see where you stand before you start.
What you're measuring:

Overall score and percentage
-
Performance by domain (quantitative reasoning, spatial/logical reasoning, analytical thinking, data interpretation --- or whatever domains the ACL STEM test covers)

Time management (did you finish each section? How much time was left? Did you rush at the end?)
-
Error patterns (what types of questions did you miss, and why?)
How to score it:

Score the test using the answer key. Calculate your overall percentage.

Break your results down by domain. If the test has 60 questions and 15 are quantitative reasoning, how many of those 15 did you get right? Do this for every domain.

For every question you got wrong, categorize the error:
-
Conceptual error: You didn't understand the underlying concept or method
-
Careless error: You understood the concept but made a calculation mistake, misread the question, or selected the wrong answer
-
Time pressure error: You ran out of time and guessed, or rushed through the question without fully thinking it through
-
Unfamiliarity error: You'd never seen this type of question before and didn't know where to start
- Write a brief diagnostic summary. Something like: "Overall: 68%. Strongest domain: data interpretation (85%). Weakest domain: spatial reasoning (50%). 7 careless errors, 5 conceptual errors in quantitative reasoning, 3 time pressure errors in the final section."
What to do with these results:
Your diagnostic baseline tells you where to focus. If spatial reasoning is your weakest domain, that's where you should spend the most study time in the coming weeks. If careless errors are costing you 7 questions, you need to build a checking habit. If time pressure caused errors in the final section, you need to practice pacing.
Don't be discouraged by your baseline score. It's supposed to reveal weaknesses --- that's its job. Students who score perfectly on a diagnostic don't need test prep.
Mock Assessment 2: Mid-Prep Checkpoint
When to take it: Roughly halfway through your preparation period. You should have done significant targeted study on your weak domains by this point.
What you're measuring:

Overall score improvement compared to baseline

Domain-specific improvement (did your weakest domain get stronger?)

Whether your error patterns have shifted (fewer conceptual errors? Still making careless mistakes?)

Time management improvement
How to score it:
Follow the same scoring and categorization process as Mock 1. Then compare:

Overall percentage: Mock 1 vs. Mock 2

Domain percentages: Mock 1 vs. Mock 2 for each domain

Error breakdown: Has the mix of error types changed?
Interpreting your results:

Overall score improved, weak domains improved: Your targeted study is working. Keep going with the same approach, and consider shifting some time to your next-weakest domain.

Overall score improved, but weak domains didn't improve much: You may be getting better at your already-strong areas while your weak areas remain stuck. Refocus your study time more aggressively on the weak domains.

Overall score stayed flat or dropped: This doesn't mean you haven't learned anything. Look at the error breakdown. If conceptual errors dropped but careless errors increased, you're understanding more but executing less carefully --- that's a different problem with a different solution. If the second mock was harder than the first, the flat score may actually represent improvement.

Time management improved: If you finished sections you previously ran out of time on, that's genuine progress even if your score didn't jump dramatically. Finishing the test means more questions answered, which means more opportunities to earn points.
What to do with these results:
Adjust your study plan for the remaining preparation period. Double down on domains that are still weak. If careless errors are persistent, build a checking routine into your test-taking strategy (re-read the question before selecting your answer, verify calculations on scratch paper). If a specific question type keeps tripping you up, seek out practice sets focused on that type.
Mock Assessment 3: Final Simulation
When to take it: One to two weeks before the actual ACL assessment. Close enough that the experience is fresh on test day, but far enough out that you still have time to address any remaining issues.
What you're measuring:

Readiness. Can you complete the full test under realistic conditions and produce a score you're satisfied with?

Remaining weak spots that need last-minute attention

Confidence level and mental endurance
How to make this one count:
This mock should be as close to the real experience as possible:

Take it at the same time of day the real test will be administered
-
Eat the same breakfast and follow the same morning routine you plan to use on test day
-
Enforce every timing rule strictly
-
If possible, take it in an unfamiliar location (a library, a friend's house) to simulate the mild discomfort of an unfamiliar testing environment
How to score it:
Same process as before. Compare to both Mock 1 and Mock 2.
Interpreting your results:
By this point, you should see clear improvement from your baseline. If your trajectory looks like 68% to 76% to 82%, you're on a strong path. If it looks like 68% to 75% to 74%, you've plateaued --- but that doesn't mean you've stopped improving. It might mean the third mock was harder, or that you hit a temporary ceiling that will break with a bit more practice.
Focus on what's actionable in the remaining days. You can't overhaul your spatial reasoning skills in a week, but you can drill your most common error types, reinforce your pacing strategy, and build confidence through targeted review.
Using Diagnostic Data to Focus Remaining Study Time
After each mock, you should know exactly where your points are being lost. Here's how to translate that data into an efficient study plan:
If most of your errors are conceptual (you don't understand the material):

Identify the specific concepts behind the questions you missed

Study those concepts through explanations, videos, or worked examples --- not just by doing more practice problems

After studying, do a targeted set of practice problems on that concept to confirm your understanding
-
If a concept still isn't clicking after focused study, ask a tutor, teacher, or knowledgeable peer to explain it differently
If most of your errors are careless (you know the material but make mistakes):

Build a double-check habit: after selecting an answer, re-read the question and verify your answer matches what was asked

On quantitative problems, redo the calculation on scratch paper rather than doing it in your head
-
Look for your specific careless error patterns. Do you misread "least" as "most"? Do you make arithmetic errors with negative numbers? Do you skip steps? Once you know your pattern, you can watch for it
If most of your errors are from time pressure:

Practice pacing: divide the total time by the number of questions to know your per-question budget
-
Train yourself to move on when a question is taking too long. Mark it, make your best guess, and come back if time allows

Do timed practice sets of 10-15 questions to build speed on specific question types
-
On test day, do a time check at the one-third and two-thirds marks of each section
If most of your errors are from unfamiliarity (you've never seen that question type):

Expose yourself to as many different question types as possible in your remaining study time

For each unfamiliar type, learn the general approach (what's the question really asking? what's the first step?) rather than trying to memorize solutions

Accept that you may encounter one or two question types on test day that you haven't seen before. Having a general problem-solving approach --- read carefully, identify what's given, figure out what's being asked, try something --- is more valuable than memorizing every possible format
Tracking Your Progress Across All Three Mocks
Create a simple tracking sheet (on paper or a spreadsheet) with the following for each mock:

Overall score (raw and percentage)

Score by domain (raw and percentage)

Number and type of errors (conceptual, careless, time pressure, unfamiliarity)

Time management notes (finished early, ran out of time, paced well)

Top 2-3 takeaways

Targeted study plan for the period before the next mock
Looking at all three mocks side by side gives you a clear picture of your preparation arc. It shows you how far you've come, confirms that your study strategies are working (or signals that you need to change approach), and builds the kind of evidence-based confidence that performs well under pressure --- because you know exactly what you're capable of and exactly where your remaining risks are.
