Module 3.4: Prompt Analysis and Response Strategy
The First 3-5 Minutes Matter Most
Most students see a writing prompt and immediately start writing. That instinct feels productive, but it's actually the fastest path to a disorganized essay. The students who score highest on the ACL Writing Assessment are the ones who spend the first few minutes thinking --- not writing.
Those 3-5 minutes of planning are an investment. They prevent you from writing two paragraphs, realizing you've gone off-topic, and having to start over with half your time gone. They help you identify what the prompt is really asking, choose your strongest ideas, and build a structure you can follow at speed.
This guide teaches you how to read a prompt surgically, plan efficiently, and adapt your approach to whatever prompt type you encounter.
How to Dissect a Writing Prompt
Every writing prompt has a job: it wants you to think about something specific and communicate that thinking clearly. Your first task is to figure out exactly what that job is.
Step 1: Read the prompt twice.
The first read is for the big picture --- what's the general topic? The second read is for precision --- what specifically am I being asked to do?
Step 2: Identify the action words.
Action words tell you what kind of thinking the prompt requires. Common ones include:

Explain --- Describe how or why something works or matters

Argue/Persuade --- Take a position and defend it with reasoning

Analyze --- Break something into parts and examine how they relate

Compare --- Identify similarities and differences
-
Evaluate --- Make a judgment about effectiveness, value, or importance

Describe --- Paint a detailed picture of something specific
-
Propose --- Suggest a solution or course of action
Step 3: Identify the scope and constraints.
Is the prompt asking about a specific context (your school, your community, a particular field of science)? Is it asking you to consider multiple perspectives? Does it give you data or a scenario you need to reference? These constraints are guardrails --- they keep you focused.
Step 4: Determine the implicit expectations.
This is the part most students miss. Beyond the literal question, what is the prompt testing? Almost always, it's testing your ability to think critically, support your ideas with specifics, and organize your thoughts under time pressure.
Explicit vs. Implicit Demands
Every prompt has things it asks you directly (explicit demands) and things it expects without saying so (implicit demands). Strong essays address both.
Example prompt (multi-part scenario format):
Scenario: Some people argue that schools should replace traditional science labs with virtual simulations to reduce costs and increase access.

Part A: What are the key advantages and disadvantages of each approach?

Part B: Do you think schools should make this switch? Support your position with specific reasoning.

Part C: Under what circumstances might virtual simulations be a better or worse fit than physical labs?
Explicit demands:

If you only address the explicit demands, you'll write a passable essay. If you also address the implicit demands --- acknowledging the counterargument, showing depth of understanding, connecting your points --- you'll write a strong one.
Brainstorming and Outlining in 3-5 Minutes
Here's a concrete process you can practice until it becomes automatic:
Minute 1: Read and decode the prompt.
Read it twice. Identify the action word. Determine what's being asked explicitly and implicitly. Decide your position if the prompt requires one.
Minute 2: Brainstorm 4-5 supporting ideas.
Jot them down as single words or short phrases --- not sentences. Don't judge them yet. Just get ideas down quickly. For example, if the prompt asks whether coding should be required in schools, your list might look like: "problem-solving skills, future job market, takes time from other subjects, not all students interested, computational thinking."
Minute 3: Select your best 2-3 ideas and arrange them.
Cross out the weakest ideas. Of what remains, which do you have the most to say about? Which can you support with a specific example? Arrange them in order: second-strongest first, weakest in the middle, strongest last.
Minute 4-5: Build a quick outline.
Your outline should look something like this:

This outline doesn't need to be neat. It's for your eyes only. Abbreviate. Use arrows. Whatever gets your roadmap down fast.
Adapting to Different Prompt Types
ACL writing prompts use a Multi-Part Scenario format (Parts A, B, C), where each part asks you to engage with the topic from a different angle. The parts often combine several of the prompt types below --- for example, Part A might ask you to analyze, Part B to argue, and Part C to propose. Understanding these underlying prompt types helps you respond effectively to each part.
Type 1: Opinion/Argument Prompts
"Should schools prioritize STEM education over the arts? Take a position and support it with specific reasoning."
Your approach:

Pick a clear side (don't try to argue both --- it leads to wishy-washy essays)

Acknowledge the opposing view briefly, then explain why your position is stronger

Use specific examples, not general claims

Your thesis should state your position and preview your reasoning
Type 2: Personal Experience/Reflection Prompts
"Describe a time when you had to solve a problem in an unexpected way. What did you learn from the experience?"
Your approach:

Choose a specific, real experience (not a vague one)

Don't just narrate --- reflect. The "what did you learn" part is where the substance lives

Connect the personal experience to a broader insight
-
Be genuine. Scorers can tell the difference between an authentic story and one manufactured to sound impressive
Type 3: Scenario-Based Prompts
"Your school has received a grant to create one new program. You've been asked to recommend either a robotics lab or a community garden. Which would you choose, and why?"
Your approach:

Engage with the specific scenario (don't ignore the details)

Make your recommendation clear in your thesis

Address why your choice is better than the alternative --- this shows you've considered both options

Use practical reasoning, not just personal preference
Type 4: Data-Interpretation Prompts
"The chart below shows student performance in math before and after a school introduced a daily problem-solving exercise. Based on the data, explain whether you think the program should be continued. Support your argument with evidence from the chart."
Your approach:

Reference specific numbers or trends from the data (don't just say "the data shows improvement")

Distinguish between what the data shows and what it doesn't (correlation vs. causation, limitations of the data)

Build your argument on the evidence provided, not just your opinions

If you identify a limitation in the data, explain what additional information would strengthen the conclusion
Walkthrough: Analyzing a Sample Prompt
Let's walk through the full process with a real example.
Prompt (multi-part scenario):
Scenario: Many scientists argue that curiosity-driven research --- where scientists explore questions without a specific practical goal --- is just as valuable as research designed to solve immediate problems.

Part B: Do you agree that curiosity-driven research is as valuable as goal-directed research? Support your position with specific examples and reasoning.

Step 3: Select and arrange.

Body 3: The unpredictability argument --- we can't know in advance which research will matter, so cutting curiosity-driven work risks losing future breakthroughs --- strongest point
Step 4: Outline.

Thesis: Curiosity-driven research is essential because it produces the foundational discoveries that applied research later builds on, and history shows that the most transformative breakthroughs often come from investigations with no immediate practical goal.

Body 1: Historical examples (penicillin, X-rays) --- discoveries that came from curiosity, not planning

Body 2: Acknowledge that practical research matters, but show it depends on curiosity-driven foundations

Body 3: The prediction problem --- we can't pick winners in advance, so we need broad exploration

Conclusion: Zoom out to the nature of scientific progress, forward-looking
This entire process should take 3-5 minutes. The essay that follows will be focused, organized, and on-topic --- because you did the hard thinking before you started writing.
Common Prompt Analysis Mistakes

Answering a question the prompt didn't ask. If the prompt asks "which would you choose," don't write a general essay about why both options are good. Pick one.

Ignoring part of the prompt. If it says "use specific examples," you need actual examples --- not vague generalities. If it says "based on the data," you need to reference the data.

Taking too long to plan. Planning is essential, but it shouldn't eat more than 5 minutes. If you find yourself still brainstorming at the 6-minute mark, pick your best two ideas and start writing.

Choosing the "safe" position instead of the one you can argue best. Don't pick the answer you think the scorer wants to hear. Pick the answer you can support with the strongest evidence. Scorers reward quality of argument, not which side you choose.

Treating the outline as optional. Even a 30-second outline --- just three bullet points jotted at the top of your screen --- will make your essay dramatically more coherent than winging it. Train yourself to outline every time until it's automatic.
Making This Automatic
The goal is to internalize this process so deeply that it doesn't feel like extra work --- it just feels like how you write. Practice it every time you do a timed essay. Time yourself on the planning phase separately at first: can you decode a prompt, brainstorm, and outline in under 5 minutes? Once you can do it consistently, you'll walk into the ACL assessment with a process you trust, no matter what prompt they put in front of you.
