Why the Writing Assessment Matters More Than You Think

Here's something most families don't fully appreciate: ACL uses blind admissions. That means the admissions committee doesn't see your name, your school, your extracurriculars, or your parent's job. They evaluate you based on three core components:

  1. Your STEM Thinking Skills Assessment score

  2. Your Writing Assessment score

  3. Your academic record (grades and math enrollment level)

The writing score is one of those three components. While LCPS doesn't publish the exact weighting formula, the fact that writing is one of only three evaluation criteria tells you it carries significant weight in the admissions decision.

This means the writing assessment isn't a formality or a tiebreaker --- it's a major part of your admissions profile. A mediocre essay can weaken an otherwise strong application, and a standout essay can elevate a student whose test score is good but not exceptional. Taking the writing assessment seriously is one of the highest-leverage things you can do in the ACL admissions process.

Format and Structure of the Writing Assessment

The ACL Writing Assessment presents students with a multi-part scenario prompt --- typically related to STEM, technology, society, or problem-solving --- and asks them to write a structured, analytical response within a strict 45-minute window.

What to Expect

  • You'll receive a multi-part scenario prompt (typically with Parts A, B, and C) that asks you to analyze a situation, take a position, and explain your reasoning about a topic related to math, science, or current social or environmental events

  • The prompt may include a short reading passage, a data set, or a scenario to respond to, with each part building on the previous one

  • You have a strict 45-minute window to plan, write, and review your response

  • The writing is completed on a secure online platform on LCPS-provided laptops --- all writing is typed

  • The essay is scored by evaluators using the official ACL Writing Rubric (see below)

Time Management

With 45 minutes, you need a plan:

  • First 3-5 minutes: Read the prompt carefully (all parts), brainstorm your key points, and outline your structure. Don't skip this step. Students who dive straight into writing often produce disorganized essays that ramble.

  • Middle portion (roughly minutes 5-40): Write your essay following your outline. Keep an eye on the clock.

  • Last 3-5 minutes: Read back through your essay. Fix unclear sentences, add a missing word here or there. This review pass catches easy issues that could obscure your ideas.

Many students skip the outline and the review, spending all their time writing. This is a mistake. Five minutes of planning prevents ten minutes of mid-essay restructuring. Three minutes of review catches errors that would otherwise lower your score.

What Evaluators Are Looking For

The ACL Writing Assessment is scored on a 0-10 point scale, based on five dimensions worth 0-2 points each. The five official rubric dimensions are:

  1. Questioning/Processing

  2. Information Gathering/Analysis

  3. Fluency/Originality

  4. Presentation/Reasoning

  5. Point of View/Perspective

Important: Grammar, spelling, and syntax do NOT count toward the writing score. The rubric is entirely focused on the quality of your thinking, reasoning, and analytical expression --- not on mechanical correctness. That said, clear writing helps evaluators understand your ideas, so don't be sloppy. But know that the points come from how well you think, not how perfectly you punctuate.

Understanding these five dimensions is the single most important thing you can do to improve your writing score. Let's break down each one.

Questioning/Processing (0-2 points)

This dimension evaluates how well you engage with the prompt --- whether you dig into the question rather than just skating across its surface.

Top scores go to essays that:

  • Demonstrate genuine engagement with the complexity of the topic

  • Ask productive follow-up questions within the response (e.g., "The real question isn't whether X works, but under what conditions")

  • Show depth of thinking --- not just "what" but "why" and "so what"

  • Process the prompt's scenario or data carefully rather than jumping to a superficial answer

Lower scores come from essays that:

  • Respond to the prompt at face value without exploring its implications

  • Miss nuances in the scenario or data provided

  • Show shallow processing --- restating the prompt rather than engaging with it

Information Gathering/Analysis (0-2 points)

This is about the evidence and examples you bring to your response and how well you analyze them.

Top scores go to essays that:

  • Support claims with concrete evidence, examples, or logical reasoning

  • Draw on relevant knowledge (scientific concepts, real-world examples, data)

  • Analyze information rather than just presenting it --- explaining why evidence matters and how it connects to the argument

  • Distinguish between strong and weak evidence

Lower scores come from essays that:

  • Make claims with no support

  • Use only generic examples ("Technology is important because it helps us learn")

  • Present evidence without explaining its relevance

  • Rely on assertions rather than analysis

Fluency/Originality (0-2 points)

This dimension rewards the flow and freshness of your thinking --- not just competence, but insight.

Top scores go to essays that:

  • Show original thinking --- not just repeating what everyone would say

  • Present ideas fluently, with each thought building naturally on the last

  • Offer a perspective or framing that feels genuinely thought-through

  • Demonstrate intellectual confidence and authentic voice

Lower scores come from essays that:

  • Stick to the most obvious interpretation without adding anything new

  • Read as formulaic or paint-by-numbers

  • Lack a sense of the writer's own thinking

Presentation/Reasoning (0-2 points)

This is how you organize and present your argument --- the logical architecture of your response.

Top scores go to essays that:

  • Have a clear thesis or central argument that directly addresses the prompt

  • Present ideas in a logical sequence where each paragraph builds on the last

  • Use transitions that show how ideas connect (not just "Also" and "Another thing")

  • Feel cohesive --- every paragraph clearly belongs and serves a purpose

  • Have a conclusion that synthesizes rather than just repeating the introduction

Lower scores come from essays that:

  • Jump randomly between ideas

  • List points without showing how they relate

  • Lack clear structure or a discernible line of reasoning

Point of View/Perspective (0-2 points)

This dimension specifically rewards your ability to consider multiple angles and take a thoughtful position.

Top scores go to essays that:

  • Take a clear, well-defined position on the issue

  • Consider multiple perspectives or dimensions of the issue

  • Address complexity --- acknowledging counterarguments or limitations rather than pretending the issue is simple

  • Evaluate competing viewpoints rather than ignoring them

  • Show the writer's own perspective is informed and considered

Lower scores come from essays that:

  • Don't clearly state a position

  • Ignore the other side of the argument entirely

  • Accept premises without questioning them

  • Present only one narrow viewpoint without acknowledging alternatives

How the Writing Score Is Weighted

In ACL's blind admissions process, your writing score stands alongside your STEM Thinking Skills Assessment score and your academic record as one of three evaluation criteria. There's no public formula revealing exactly how much weight each factor carries, but the fact that writing is one of only three components tells you a great deal about its importance.

Think about it this way: if your STEM test score is strong and your GPA is solid, a weak writing score becomes the obvious weak link in your application. And with hundreds of qualified applicants competing for limited spots, evaluators are looking for reasons to differentiate candidates. A strong essay gives them a reason to say yes.

Conversely, if your test score is good but not exceptional, a genuinely impressive writing sample can demonstrate the kind of analytical thinking and communication ability that the Academies value. Writing is where your personality, your reasoning ability, and your capacity for clear thought come through in a way that a multiple-choice test can't capture.

What a Top-Scoring Essay Looks Like vs. an Average One

Let's make this concrete. Imagine the prompt follows the ACL multi-part format:

Scenario: Your school district is considering replacing traditional textbooks with tablets and digital resources across all grade levels.

  • Part A: What are the strongest arguments for and against this change?

  • Part B: Based on your analysis, what position would you recommend the school board take? Support your recommendation with specific reasoning.

  • Part C: What factors might make your recommendation work better in some schools than others?

Average Response (Summarized)

"I think schools should use tablets because technology is the future. Tablets are better because they are more modern. Students like using technology. Also, tablets can hold many books. In conclusion, tablets are better than textbooks."

What's wrong here:

  • The thesis is vague ("technology is the future" --- why does that matter?)

  • The supporting points are assertions without evidence

  • "Students like using technology" is unsupported and doesn't prove tablets improve learning

  • No counterargument is addressed

  • The conclusion just restates the introduction

  • Generic language throughout

Top-Scoring Response (Summarized)

"Schools should integrate digital resources alongside --- not instead of --- traditional textbooks, because the research on screen-based learning shows both advantages and limitations that a balanced approach can optimize. Digital resources excel at interactivity: simulations in chemistry, adaptive practice in math, and instant access to updated information. However, studies have shown that reading comprehension is often stronger with physical text, partly because physical pages provide spatial memory cues that screens don't. A hybrid model captures the strengths of both formats while mitigating their individual weaknesses. The question isn't 'tablets or textbooks?' --- it's 'when does each tool serve students best?'"

What's right here:

  • Takes a nuanced position (hybrid, not all-or-nothing)

  • Provides specific examples (chemistry simulations, adaptive math practice)

  • References research and explains the reasoning behind it (spatial memory cues)

  • Acknowledges the other side and engages with it

  • Uses precise language and confident voice

  • Reframes the question --- a sign of genuine critical thinking

  • Concise and purposeful --- no filler

The difference between these two responses isn't writing talent --- it's preparation and practice. The student who wrote the top-scoring response learned to support claims with specifics, consider both sides, and write with precision. Those are learnable skills.

Practical Steps to Prepare

  1. Practice under timed conditions. Get a prompt, set a 45-minute timer, and type your response --- the actual assessment is completed on LCPS-provided laptops. Do this at least once a week in the weeks leading up to the assessment.

  2. Read your own essays critically. After writing, go back with the rubric dimensions in mind. Where's your thesis? Is it specific? Are your examples concrete or generic? Did you address the other side?

  3. Read strong analytical writing. Read op-eds from quality publications, science journalism, or well-written STEM articles. Pay attention to how the authors structure arguments, use evidence, and write with clarity.

  4. Build a mental library of examples. Think about STEM topics you know well --- technology you've used, science concepts you've studied, problems you've thought about. Having ready examples in your head means you won't waste time during the test trying to think of something to write about.

  5. Practice the outline habit. Every time you write a practice essay, spend the first few minutes outlining. Thesis at the top, three supporting points below it, a note about the counterargument, and your conclusion. This becomes your roadmap.

  6. Work on your typing speed. Speed matters. If you can comfortably produce more words in the same 45-minute window while maintaining clarity, you can include more detail and more analysis --- which means a higher score. Practice typing quickly and clearly under timed conditions.
