What Is the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment?

The STEM Thinking Skills Assessment is a standardized test used by LCPS as one of three components in the blind admissions process for AOS and AET. It's created by Insight Assessment, a testing company that specializes in measuring reasoning and critical thinking skills. This is not a test that LCPS designed in-house --- it's a professionally developed, externally validated assessment.

The test is only given to 8th grade students applying through the Fall Track for AOS and AET. If your student is applying through a different pathway (like Advanced AET or MATA), this specific assessment is not part of their process.

Here's the critical context: under the blind admissions system, the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment score is one of only three factors that determine whether your student gets admitted. The other two are the writing assessment and the student's academic record (grades and math enrollment). There is no interview, no portfolio, no teacher recommendation, no extracurricular list. That makes this test enormously important --- it carries roughly one-third of the entire admissions weight.

Scoring Range: 260 to 300

The STEM Thinking Skills Assessment is scored on a scale of 260 to 300. That's a 40-point range, which is much tighter than most standardized tests students are used to seeing.

What this means in practice: every single point matters. On a test where the entire range spans 40 points, the difference between a 275 and a 280 can be significant. Students who are used to scoring in the "90th percentile" on school tests need to recalibrate their thinking here. This isn't about getting an A --- it's about maximizing every point within a narrow band.

LCPS does not publish the exact cutoff scores for admission, and the cutoff likely shifts from year to year depending on the applicant pool. But the tight scoring range tells you something important: this test is designed to differentiate among strong students. Most applicants are already good at math and science. The test needs to separate the strong from the very strong, and it does that within a compressed scale.

The Five Measured Domains

The STEM Thinking Skills Assessment measures five distinct domains. Each domain tests a different type of reasoning, and the questions are designed to measure how students think --- not what they've memorized.

Overall Critical Reasoning

This domain tests your ability to analyze arguments, evaluate evidence, and draw logical conclusions. You'll encounter scenarios where you need to identify assumptions, spot weaknesses in reasoning, and determine what conclusions are actually supported by given information --- versus what merely sounds plausible.

Critical reasoning is not about opinions. It's about whether a conclusion logically follows from the evidence. This is the domain where students who read carefully and think precisely have a major advantage.

Out-of-the-Box Algebra

This domain goes beyond standard algebra problems. Yes, you need to be comfortable with algebraic expressions, equations, and functions. But the emphasis is on reasoning through mathematical relationships --- recognizing patterns, working through constraints, and thinking about how quantities relate to each other. The official name --- "Out-of-the-Box Algebra" --- signals that these aren't routine textbook problems.

The minimum math prerequisite for ACL applicants is enrollment in Algebra I or higher, so the test assumes that foundation. But the questions are not the same type of problems you'd find on an Algebra I final exam. They're designed to test mathematical thinking, not just computational skill.

Spatial Relational Thinking

This domain measures your ability to mentally manipulate shapes, visualize objects in three dimensions, and understand spatial relationships. Think: folding a flat pattern into a 3D shape, rotating an object in your mind, counting blocks in a structure (including ones you can't see), and following transformations like reflections and rotations.

For many students, this is the most unfamiliar domain. School math rarely spends much time on spatial reasoning, which means students often haven't practiced these skills systematically. The good news: spatial thinking is highly trainable. Students who practice deliberately can see significant improvement.

Tech Logic

This domain tests logical thinking in the context of technology and computational systems. Questions might involve understanding how a process or algorithm works, following a sequence of operations step by step, interpreting flowcharts or decision trees, and reasoning about inputs and outputs.

You don't need to know how to code. This isn't a programming test. It's testing whether you can think logically and systematically --- the kind of thinking that underlies both computer science and engineering.

Scientific Thinking

This domain evaluates how well you understand the scientific method and can reason through scientific scenarios. You might be asked to identify what makes a good experimental design, determine which variables should be controlled, interpret data from an experiment, or figure out what conclusions are (and aren't) supported by results.

Again, this isn't a test of science knowledge. You don't need to have memorized the periodic table or know the names of cell organelles. It's testing whether you think like a scientist --- systematically, carefully, and with attention to what the evidence actually shows.

Test Format and Logistics

Multiple Choice

All questions on the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment are multiple choice. There is no free response, no open-ended writing, and no show-your-work section. You select the best answer from the choices provided.

This has strategic implications. Since every question has one correct answer among a set of options, process-of-elimination is a legitimate and valuable strategy. If you can confidently rule out two or three answer choices, your odds improve dramatically even if you're not 100% certain of the right answer.

No Calculator

Calculators are not allowed on the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment. This is important to internalize early, because many 8th graders have become dependent on calculators for even basic arithmetic.

The test is not designed to require complex calculations. You won't need to compute square roots of large numbers or multiply four-digit numbers together. But you do need to be comfortable with mental math --- basic arithmetic, working with fractions, estimating, and doing simple calculations quickly and accurately without reaching for a device.

If your student has been using a calculator for everything since 6th grade, start practicing mental math now. This is a skill that atrophies quickly when it's not used, but it also comes back quickly with practice.

Timed Assessment

The STEM Thinking Skills Assessment is a 50-minute test with 33 questions. That works out to roughly 90 seconds per question --- tight but manageable if you practice good time discipline. Time management is a real factor --- students who spend too long on difficult questions may not finish the test.

The key time management skill is knowing when to move on. If a question has you stuck after a reasonable amount of effort, flag it mentally, pick your best guess, and move on. You can come back to it if time permits. But leaving easy questions unanswered at the end because you burned too much time on hard questions early on is one of the most common and most costly mistakes students make on timed standardized tests.

How the Score Fits Into Admissions

Remember the blind admissions framework from Module 1.1: every application is evaluated on exactly three components.

  1. STEM Thinking Skills Assessment score --- your performance on this test

  2. Writing Assessment score --- graded against the ACL Writing Rubric

  3. Academic record --- your grades and what math course you're enrolled in

Your test score is not evaluated in isolation. It's weighed alongside your writing and your academic record. A strong score on the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment can offset a slightly weaker writing sample, and vice versa. But given how selective AOS is in particular (roughly 4-8% acceptance rate), you generally need to be strong across all three.

Also remember: the evaluators reviewing your application don't know your name, your school, or anything else about you. The score is just a number on a page, evaluated alongside two other data points. There's no opportunity to explain a bad testing day or provide additional context. The score is what it is.

That's exactly why preparation matters so much. This isn't a test you can cram for the night before --- it measures reasoning skills that develop over time with deliberate practice. The remaining modules in this section will walk through each of the five domains in detail, with concrete strategies and practice opportunities for each one.

What to Expect on Test Day

The STEM Thinking Skills Assessment is typically administered in October or November of 8th grade --- earlier than many families expect, and well before TJ's problem-solving essay in January. This timeline means that preparation needs to start during the summer before 8th grade or in early fall at the latest.

The test is administered in person on a secure online platform using LCPS-provided laptops. Students should expect a formal testing environment --- assigned seating, proctors, timed sections, and strict rules about what can and can't be brought into the testing room.

Come prepared with:

  • A government-issued or school-issued ID if required

  • A calm, rested mind --- get a good night's sleep and eat a solid breakfast
