Overview
Module 1.2: Choosing the Right Pathway
Now that you understand what the Academies of Loudoun campus looks like, let's dig into each program so you can figure out which one actually fits your student. This is arguably the most important decision in the entire admissions process --- picking the right program shapes everything from what your student studies to what career doors open down the road.
There are three main programs (AOS, AET, and MATA), plus a special pathway called Advanced AET for students who want to enter AET after 9th grade. Let's walk through each one.
Academy of Science (AOS)
AOS is the research track. It's designed for students who are genuinely excited about asking deep scientific questions and then spending years finding the answers.
Here's what makes AOS different from just "taking a lot of AP science classes":
Years 1 and 2: Integrated Science Foundation
In the first two years, AOS students don't follow the standard LCPS science sequence. Instead, they take an integrated science curriculum that weaves together physics, chemistry, and earth science into a single, inquiry-based course. A lot of the learning happens in the lab, and many of those labs are student-designed --- not just cookbook experiments where you follow the instructions. Students are learning how to think like scientists from day one.
On the math side, AOS runs its own integrated math sequence as well. The courses are rigorous, with content that aligns to and often exceeds AP-level standards.
Years 3 and 4: Independent Research
This is the heart of AOS. By the end of sophomore year, students design an independent research project with guidance from faculty mentors. Then in junior and senior year, they spend two full years executing that project --- real original research, not a glorified science fair poster.
Students enroll in Independent Science Research alongside their choice of AP science courses. In 12th grade, they pick from one of four AP sciences while continuing their research work. The research course emphasizes scientific habits of mind, statistics, technical writing, and communicating findings.
AOS provides a research budget of approximately $200 per student (not including instrumentation), and the labs are equipped with serious equipment --- electron microscopes, FTIR spectrometers, gas centrifuges, 3D printers, bio 3D printers, fatigue cycle testing machinery, and more.
Who AOS is built for:

Students who light up when they talk about how things work at a fundamental level

Students aiming for research universities, pre-med, or careers in scientific research
One honest thing to know: AOS is extremely selective (roughly 4-8% acceptance rate in recent years). But selectivity shouldn't be the reason your student applies. Apply to AOS because the research-centered model genuinely matches how your student wants to spend their high school years.
Academy of Engineering and Technology (AET)
If AOS is about understanding why things work, AET is about building things that work. AET takes the same rigorous STEM foundation and channels it into applied problem-solving --- designing, coding, prototyping, and launching.
AET offers three distinct tracks, and students choose one when they apply:
Engineering Track
This is hands-on engineering design. Students learn to integrate math and science concepts into engineering problems, practice communicating technical information, and apply the engineering design process to complete multiple engineering projects throughout the program. The curriculum demands rigorous study habits and develops college-level skills in design, prototyping, and systems thinking.
If your student is the type who takes things apart to see how they're built, sketches out inventions in the margins of their notebook, or gets excited about robotics --- this is their track.
Information Technology / Computer Science Track
This track covers programming, cybersecurity, data science, networking, and systems design. AET Physics is the first science course for IT pathway students, and it's a rigorous course that prepares students for college-level work in computer science and related fields.
If your student gravitates toward coding, building apps, understanding how networks work, or anything in the digital realm --- the IT/CS track is the natural fit.
Entrepreneurship Track
Entrepreneurship is a two-year program covering marketing, business operations, and innovation. Students learn to think entrepreneurially --- identifying opportunities in the marketplace that could improve their communities. This track sits at the intersection of technology and business.
If your student is the one who's always coming up with business ideas, running a small online venture, or fascinated by how tech companies grow from garage startups to industry leaders --- entrepreneurship gives them a structured pathway to develop those instincts.
AET's shared foundation:
Like AOS, AET has its own integrated math and science courses that all students take regardless of track. All AOS/AET integrated math and science courses carry a 0.5 (Honors) or 1.0 (AP) GPA weight, calculated into the student's home-school GPA. The difference in emphasis: where AOS funnels everything toward research, AET funnels everything toward applied design and creation.
Who AET is built for:

Students interested in engineering schools, computer science programs, or tech entrepreneurship
Advanced AET: The Pathway for Current High School Students
Here's something many families don't realize: you don't have to apply to the Academies as an 8th grader. If your student is currently in 10th grade and didn't apply (or didn't get in) during the Fall Admissions Cycle, Advanced AET offers a second chance.
What Advanced AET is:
Advanced AET is a two-year, accelerated version of the Engineering or IT curriculum. Students enter as juniors and complete an abridged version of what four-year AET students cover. It's not a watered-down program --- it's a compressed one.
Who can apply:
Only current 10th graders. This isn't open to 9th graders or 11th graders --- it's specifically designed as a junior-senior pathway. Students must have completed Math Analysis, AP Precalculus, or Precalculus DE by the end of 10th grade.
Critical disqualifier: Any student who is currently enrolled in or has already completed AP Calculus BC is ineligible for Advanced AET.
How admissions work (this is different from regular AOS/AET):
Advanced AET does NOT use the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment. Instead, applicants are evaluated on:

PSAT (NMSQT) score --- this is the primary standardized test requirement. Students without a PSAT score can substitute an SAT or ACT score report.

Writing Assessment --- evaluated against the ACL Writing Rubric, just like the regular cycle

Interest Statement --- a focused written statement about why the student wants to join AET and which pathway (Engineering or IT/CS) they plan to pursue

Academic record --- students must have completed two science credits by the end of 10th grade, with final grades of C or above in every course in 9th grade and C or above in every course for Semester 1 of 10th grade
Research Earth Science, Research Biology, and Research Chemistry are recommended science courses, though not strictly required.
When to apply:
Advanced AET falls under the Winter Admissions Cycle, which opens around late November. This is a completely separate timeline from the Fall Admissions Cycle that 8th graders use.
Why this matters:
Advanced AET is an underutilized pathway. Many families think the Academies train has left the station after 8th grade --- it hasn't. If your student has developed stronger STEM interests during high school, or if they didn't apply the first time around, Advanced AET is a legitimate way in.
Monroe Advanced Technical Academy (MATA)
MATA is fundamentally different from AOS and AET, and understanding that difference is critical to making the right choice for your student.
While AOS and AET are geared toward competitive university admissions and research or engineering careers, MATA is designed to prepare students for both college and direct workforce entry. It holds a Governor's STEM Academy designation from the Virginia Department of Education --- a recognition that the program delivers serious, industry-aligned career and technical education.
What MATA offers:
MATA provides 26 career pathway options organized across multiple career clusters. These aren't just survey courses --- they're rigorous, industry-preparation programs where students can earn real certifications, licenses, and credentials while still in high school. Pathways span areas like:

Health sciences (certified nurse aide, pharmacy technician, biotechnology, EMT)

Information technology (cybersecurity, CISCO networking, computer and digital animation)

Skilled trades (welding technology, automotive service, automotive collision repair, architecture and building construction)

Public safety (administration of justice)

Creative and technical fields (graphic communications, digital moviemaking)

How MATA admissions work (this changed recently):
Starting with the 2025-2026 admissions cycle, MATA shifted from a committee-review process to a lottery system. Under the old process, students submitted resumes, recommendations, career goals statements, PSAT scores, and transcripts --- and a committee selected students. That's gone now.
Under the new system, students who meet baseline eligibility criteria enter a lottery. The criteria are straightforward:

Enrollment in Algebra I or higher

Minimum GPA of 2.0 (or 3.0 for select dual enrollment programs that require it per Northern Virginia Community College standards)

On-Track Graduation Verification (an objective data check confirming the student is on track for on-time graduation)
Meet those requirements, and your name goes into the lottery. The LCPS School Board approved this change to broaden access --- data showed that enrollment of students with disabilities had dropped from 17% to 9% between 2019 and 2024 under the old system.
Important eligibility note for 8th graders: 8th graders applying to MATA are only eligible for one pathway: Introduction to Health and Medical Sciences. All other 25 pathways are restricted to 10th and 11th grade applicants.
Who MATA is built for:

Students who may plan to go to college, enter an apprenticeship, or go directly into the workforce

Deciding Between Programs: A Decision Framework
Choosing the right pathway isn't about prestige --- it's about fit. Here's a framework to help you think through the decision:
Remember: students may only participate in ONE ACL program at a time. If a student wants to switch programs after enrolling, they must fully withdraw and re-apply during the Winter admissions cycle. Choose carefully --- this is a commitment.
Start with your student's interests, not the acceptance rates.
It's tempting to apply to AOS because it's "the hardest to get into" and therefore must be "the best." That's backwards thinking. A student who loves coding and building apps will be miserable spending two years on an independent research project in chemistry. A student who's passionate about automotive technology doesn't belong in an engineering design curriculum. The best program is the one that aligns with what your student actually wants to do.
Ask these questions:

Does your student prefer understanding how things work (AOS) or building things that work (AET)?

Is your student drawn to a specific career field where hands-on training matters more than theoretical depth (MATA)?

Can your student sustain focus on a single research project for two years (AOS requires this)?

Is your student already in high school and looking for a way into the Academies (Advanced AET)?
Consider the practical differences:

AOS and AET use blind, merit-based admissions. Your student needs strong test scores, writing, and grades.

MATA uses a lottery. If your student meets the baseline criteria, it's essentially a coin flip.

Advanced AET uses PSAT/SAT/ACT scores instead of the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment --- a completely different kind of preparation.
Think about long-term goals:

Aiming for a top research university in the sciences? AOS provides the research portfolio that admissions officers value.

Targeting engineering school or a CS program? AET builds the technical skills and project portfolio that set applicants apart.

Want industry certifications and a clear career pathway right out of high school? MATA delivers that.

All three programs look strong on a college application. Don't let anyone tell you that MATA "doesn't count" --- a Governor's STEM Academy designation is meaningful.
The Dual Application Strategy
Here's something many families overlook: you can apply to both AOS and AET in the same admissions cycle. They're separate programs with separate admissions decisions, but the application window is the same (the Fall Admissions Cycle for 8th graders).
Why this matters:
Applying to both programs doubles your student's chances of getting into the Academies. If they're admitted to both, they choose which one to attend. If they're admitted to only one, the decision is made for them. Either way, they're in.
How it works:

Both applications go through the same LCPS GO portal

Both use the same STEM Thinking Skills Assessment and Writing Assessment scores

Both evaluate the same academic record (grades and math enrollment)

The admissions decisions are made independently --- getting into one has no bearing on the other
When it makes sense to apply to both:

When it might not make sense:

Your student has zero interest in one of the programs. Don't apply to AOS if your student would never attend even if admitted --- there's no strategic value.

Your student's interests clearly point to one program. If they're all about coding and app development, AET is the obvious fit and AOS would be a distraction.
The bottom line: if there's any genuine interest in both programs, apply to both. There's no penalty for dual applications, and the upside is significant.
